Thinking outside the Box

Plato describes human beings as being chained because they aren't aware of their surroundings and likewise choose not to discover what is beyond eyesight, without seeing the pure object or thing. He emphasizes that we choose to see that and not the reality of things. In which we choose to believe what we see without questioning it. Sarte as well describes human's limitations almost in the same way as Plato. He believes that humans dont try to look for a way out of their situation and solemly accept what they have been put to. They believe what they see and hear.Along with believing what others have said and done. A solution to our limitations is to discover that which is beyond what we see and never to trust that what we see is our reality.

The main theme of Plato's article was about the cave being the barrier between the reality and allusions. The cave to them were the shackles that hadn't yet been broken. While the objects were the shacles to them and not themselves or their actions. They had no consequences because they only knew what they saw and weren't aware of what was out there. Those who did escape saw reality and were disgusted to see what they had been living before. Many however couldn't escape not only because they didn't know about their surroundings but because they had no goal or aspiration of reaching beyond.

In contrast with Plato Sarte's theme was that other people made one's barrier. The people whom surround you are the ones who make your hell without the help of tools or such things as Dante's inferno. Garcin was in peace with his surroundings and thought he had brought upon himself thus actions, however he soon realized that his hell would be the others with him. These people showed reflections of who Garcin was and his actions that had brought him to the consequences. Many knew that had no way of escaping and were aware that their own actions had brought them to their hell.

Both Plato and Sarte had the same theme but with two very distinct barriers. Plato's barrier was the person not being able to see reality or reach beyond that. Unlike Sarte whos barrier were other people who created ones hell.

Literature Analysis :" Like Water for Chocolate"

1. In the story The main character who is Tita De la Garza is the youngest daughter of a family living in Mexico. Being the youngest daughter is of tradition in the family she can not marry because she is to take care of mama Elena. Tita however falls in love with Pedro and throughout the story she struggles to gain her independence and conquer her beloved Pedro.

2. The theme of the novel is that through struggles and hardships you learn the true meaning of oneself's character.

3.The author's tone is that of tenderness.
"Senorita Tita,I would like to take advantage of the opportunity to to be alone with you to tell you that I am deeply in love with you."
"Nacha and Tita wept until there were no more tears in Tita's eyes. Then she cried without tear, which is said to hurt even more, like dry labor."
"Tita stood as if in a trance, staring at the whitness of the sheets; only for a few seconds, but long enough to cause a sort of blindness. Wherever she looked she saw the color whit. When she looked at Rosaura, who was writing out some invitations, she saw only a snowy ghost. But she showed nothing and no one noticed her condition."

4.The literary techniques that strengthened my understanding of the story was metaphors, tone, diction, symbols, and syntax.
"I am sure I will be, since through this marriage I have gained what I really wanted: the chance to be near you the woman I really love"
"Tita clasped the roses to her chest so tightly that when she got to the kitchen, the roses which had been mostly pink, had turned quite red form the blood was flowing from tita's hand and breasts."
"Mama Elena was merciless, killing with a single blow."

New essay of Hamlet's Performative Utterance

"To be or not to be," proves Hamlet's perforamtive utterance in which he is seeking for himself. Hamlet's inner struggles are viewed in his actions and the plot within the play. In which Hamlet is seen as a weak madman, however very strategic. Boer's article of performative utterance displays the very opposite opinion of Hamlet's reasonings and actions.

Hamlet appears to be an undecided and frightened character with no sense of self. In that Hamlet's self overhearing leads him to take the decisiones he takes. One of the biggest decisiones Hamlet takes is proving who he truly is to himself. He deals with the obstacles in his path that only direct him to a maximum pain towards himself. He struggles with the inner conflict of his father's death and knowing the guilty but taking no action. Only talking the talk but being unable to walk the walk. His failure of showputs him in a point of agression and madness. Of which is visible to all whom surround him and make him seem a weak and unstable character. However, Hamlet's true self struggle leads him to the tragities and pain he causes within himself.

As the play progresses so does Hamlet's thoughts and character. The struggle of taking action in himself and putting the pieces back together create an impact that causes his failures. Even through his perserverance of avenging his fathers death Hamlet never took action from the impact of his familys wrong doings. All the obstacles Hamlet dealt with like that of Cladius and Gertude only pushed him farther into a point of no return within his madness. Hamlet who is seeking to find the strength to keep living keeps being faced with obstacles that point him in the other direction.

Boer's article creates just the opposite picture of Hamlet's true intentions. That Hamlet is only putting on a show, displaying his weakness to gain advantage. He only goes along with being a madman to reach his goal of avenging his fathers death. Boer's points out that Hamlet can display actionof a show but puts on no action. Proving the truth that Hamlet can't pull through with his intentions and is left at displaying what he will not pursue.

All in all, Hamlet's performative utterance lead him to a point where he looses connection between his reality of his intentions and just merely a display of intentions. In which he seeks for himself but keeps being dissapointed to find what he finds within his surroundings.

Essay on Hamlet's language

Hamlet's use of language differentiates with that of many epic heroes in that Shakespeare's language is based on the tragedies. While that of Beowulf is based on their accomplishments. Both authors of “Hamlet” and “Beowulf” language are widely differential.

In “Hamlet”, Shakespeare portrays to be an uncertain raging madman. Someone who isn't taken seriously by the people and who seeks revenge at all cost. In his soliloquy of “To be, or not to be” the quote of “ by opposing end them. To die, to sleep no more” accentuates that Hamlet is in confusion and is thinking of suicide. Shakespeare intrigues the reader in showing that this novel has started off as a tragic character with inner conflicts that will be seen played out. That which creates Shakespeare to be a man whose language is more inclined in that of portraying the downside of things and creating an atmosphere that creates vivid pictures of Hamlet's madness. In which Shakespeare creates no association with that of an epic heroes language.

In contrast with “Hamlet ”, “Beowulf” is seen as an epic hero. By proving this through his conquests and glory. “Beowulf got ready donned his war-gear, indifferent to death”, showing Beowulf's attributes that the author portrays with a clear message of showing that Beowulf is an epic hero. One who the author makes a clear statement providing context clues and foreshadowing Beowulf as a role model whose courage has brought him to be seen as that whom he is, an epic hero. The language here seen differs from Shakespeare who creates a sense of failure and mental instability of the main author while in Beowulf he is seen as determined and confident. \

Both “Hamlet” and “Beowulf” language differentiates in that they are seen in two different sides of the room. Shakespeare provides Hamlet as a tragedy within a tragedy. In which Hamlet is viewed as the tragedy who carries out tragedies within the play. Beowulf is viewed as a hero who has outdone that of which an ordinary man would.

In conclusion, Shakespeare's language portrays Hamlet to be tragic through his actions and thoughts. In contrast with Beowulf is seen as that of an epic hero who is composed and viewed as a strong minded determined character. While Hamlet is portrayed as the total opposite as uncertain and mad.

What I have Learned

I have learned how to find mulitple soucres online and offline for literary works. Before this class I never understood how to search for a particular subject or work and now I do. Creating the blog has helped me be more connected online in a useful way. I can ask for help at any time when needed by asking Dr. Preston or commenting on my peers blog. This has increased the knowledge I have of how to get help not just from what I have learned in a lecture but online and searching other resources.

Roy Christopher

The main highlights of his speech were of how he first got involved in the web which was by starting his own paper magzines while still a teen with his friends. As time passed he started using the web to create this information, in which he said,"the web is inevitable once you get into it you just get sucked into it".
He identified that the use of the web is now very much in a way a sense of necessity but a struggle as well. Along with the advent horizon that the web represents which will only create positive outcomes for our future that being the digital natives. In which he specified that the medium and the message are all connected but the message dopesn't take from the medium because the medium is the most important. To be able to balance the use of technology without going overboard. The advent horizon which he sees can be seen as an advantage or a disadvantage to many. The digital natives are raised with the use of such technology and can use this to their advantage. We only have to know more about technology to be the more prepared. Many don't trust our generation saying that texting or the web have changed our literature in which he finds the distrust they have in our generation. A key phrase that really caught my mind was "program or be programmed" it only amplified my thinkimg of what he was trying to say by this? Was it that he intended for us to be the ones to manipulate the web instead of the web manipulating us or was it just to have the knowledge of the web because it is in a way a necessity for our generation?
